Terral Seed Grain Sorghum Hybrid Development

It is our goal to develop the most adapted and productive grain sorghum hybrids in the South; develop high end producing hybrids and to develop drought tolerant middle management hybrids that stand the tough conditions.

Objectives

  • Improve harvestable yield.
  • Improve standability.
  • Increase drought and heat stress tolerance.
  • Increase yield stability under adverse conditions.
  • Specific Yield Attributes
  • Higher total yields
  • Heat and drought tolerance
  • Improved early emergence and growth
  • Improved disease and insect resistance
  • Improved test weight
  • Improved late planted hybrid performance

To achieve these objectives, researchers work to:

  • Maximize number of Mid-South adapted hybrids. Terral Seed Research yield tests more grain sorghum hybrids in the South than all the rest of the companies combined. This is reflected in the performance of our hybrids.
  • Develop inbreds using male sterility and hand pollination.
  • Conduct over 2500 small plots annually at multiple testing levels.
  • Conduct strip advancement plots at numerous locations to geographically target sorghum hybrids within the South.
  • Plant at different plant populations and planting dates to determine optimum population for each elite hybrid.
  • Test dryland vs irrigated hybrid performance on multiple soil types.
  • Work with germplasm that represents 95% of all grain sorghum adapted to the South.
